Ragnarok Online Pets Guide: Taming, Feeding and Loyalty Bonuses

Trinity Networks · 2026

Behind the leveling grind and the siege wars, Ragnarok Online hides one of the earliest pet systems in the genre. A handful of monsters can be caught, fed and raised from shy strangers into loyal companions that follow you through every map. The bonuses are modest, but veterans keep their pets for a simpler reason: after a few weeks of feeding, the little thing becomes part of the account.

Catching: taming items and the slot machine

Each tamable monster answers to one specific taming item. A Poring wants an Unripe Apple, a Drops takes Orange Juice, a Lunatic falls for a Rainbow Carrot and a Savage can be tempted with Sweet Milk. Use the item on the right monster and a slot-machine minigame decides the outcome. The chance is fixed and small — lowering the monster's health does not improve it — so catching a pet is mostly an exercise in patience and a stack of taming items.

Pet intimacy climbs through feeding discipline: keep hunger in the middle band and loyalty follows.

Intimacy: the real pet stat

A caught pet lives in a Cute Pet egg and tracks one number that matters: intimacy. It climbs through five stages from Awkward and Shy up to Cordial and finally Loyal. Feeding is the lever. Feed too rarely and intimacy slides back down; feed too often and the intimacy gain per meal drops. The sweet spot is feeding when the pet's hunger sits in the middle band — neither starving nor stuffed.

  • Check hunger before feeding — feeding a full pet wastes the item and the gain.
  • Feed on a schedule — small regular meals beat panic feeding once a week.
  • Never let it run away — a neglected pet at the lowest intimacy can leave for good.
  • Keep it out when safe — intimacy grows while the pet travels with you.

What a loyal pet actually gives

At Loyal intimacy a pet grants a small permanent bonus listed in its description — a touch of attack, critical rate or survivability depending on the species. No pet replaces equipment, and anyone selling pets as a power upgrade is overstating the case. Treat the system as what it is: a long, cheap companion project with a modest stat ribbon on top, and one of the few systems in the game that rewards consistency over grinding speed.
