Thief Class Guide: Assassin vs Rogue — Speed, Crits and Highway Robbery

Trinity Networks · 2026

The Thief is Ragnarok Online's promise that speed and nerve can stand in for armor. It levels fast, steals loot other classes never see, and then forks into two of the game's most distinct identities: the Assassin, a burst-damage executioner, and the Rogue, a walking heist that strips enemies down to their dignity. Picking between them shapes how you will play for years.

The Thief stage: Double Attack pays for everything

The first-class kit is small but honest. Double Attack gives a growing chance to strike twice with a dagger — at max rank it fires on half your swings — and Hiding erases you from most monsters' sight. Steal quietly skims extra loot from everything you kill, which is why Thief alts fund so many main characters. Build AGI for flee and attack speed, keep enough STR to carry potions, and the early maps fall quickly.

Thief leveling is a rhythm game: kite, double-attack, hide, repeat — and Steal turns every kill into a small dividend.

Assassin: the katar and the crit

Assassins revolve around the katar, a weapon family that doubles their critical rate and rewards a full LUK-and-AGI build. Sonic Blow delivers the class's signature burst, Enchant Poison adds a property to every swing, and later Grimtooth lets a katar build hit at range. Reborn as Assassin Cross, the class gains Enchant Deadly Poison and Soul Destroyer, and becomes one of the most feared duelists in the game.

Rogue: robbery as a combat style

Rogues fight with a bow or a dagger, but their real weapons are the Strip skills, which peel an opponent's weapon, shield, armor and helm away mid-fight. Plagiarism copies a skill the Rogue was just hit with, and Intimidate teleports the Rogue and a grabbed party member across the map. In War of Emperium a good Stalker — the Rogue's rebirth — dismantles defenders piece by piece while the rest of the guild fights the ones still dressed.

Mistakes that haunt Thief players

Two traps repeat across servers. The first is ignoring VIT entirely: pure flee builds feel immortal at level 60 and get flattened the moment a map's monsters start landing hits through it. The second is choosing the branch for its reputation instead of its rhythm. If you enjoy patient, surgical disruption, the Rogue path rewards you every session; if you want to delete a target and walk away, the Assassin never stops being satisfying. Neither forgives a player who picked the other one's fantasy.
